Further information

General note [S.l.], [s.n.], 17th century, second half
The main scribe has numbered the pages of the Tenor, which is used only in the four-voice pieces; all four part-books are also foliated in pencil. The parts have been reversed and copying begun at both ends; some folios in between are ruled but are otherwise blank
Canto, f. 71v: one of the empty staves has been used for a few notes in tablature, probably for viol
The spelling, compared with that in comparable printed sources, contains various peculiarities
'Abraham Ratclif' (name found on f. iir of the Bass part). On loan to the British Library from the Madrigal Society. Deposited in 1954
Set of four part-books of unknown provenance containing mainly sacred English vocal music. Reversing the parts, a few instrumental pieces are found. The vocal works are for three or four voices, with the exception of one that is in six parts, in score. Many of the pieces were originally composed on Italian secular texts, but are here presented with English sacred words (travestimento spirituale). The majority of the vocal pieces were originally meant to be performed with continuo
